Student and Faculty Highlights of the Year

This page features athletic records, officers, themes, important numbers, important happenings, and other educational information from the year in question. It provides a quick and ready resource for Bobcat Grads and families!

Student Council Highlights –  Together with faculty members, formed a student discipline board, and helped make posters informing the public about voting in the election to build the gym.

Student Council Members – Dan Brost was president; Seniors – Mike Wacker and Robyn Anderson;  Juniors - Sophomores – Doug Messersmith and Cindy Watkins; Frosh – Nancy Lembke and David Nikont

National Honor Society Members – Induction was held for seventeen members in 1975. Greg Moeller was President; Debbie Wood was Vice President; other members included John Prochazka, Dennis Zeller, and  Jane Phillips

Music Department – Presented the operetta, “Christmas in Foreign Lands and at Home”, with sixth graders playing the parts of Mexicans, Norwegians, and Americans. Two concerts were given, with the “Mid-Winter” and “Pop” presented. Bob Haas was president, Caren Schekall Vice President of the Music Association for Director Joan Longmore. There were 54 students in chorus, led by Mr. Jim Miller.

Drama and One Acts – Champions of the Panhandle Conference, the cast of “Effects of Gamma Rays on Marigolds” also won a superior at Districts.  The three act play featured, “The Wonder Hat”, “Shock of His Life”, and a “Charlie Brown” play. Actors included – Marty Kuhn, Robyn Anderson, Sheri Gordon, Chris Cowan, Dudley Prochazka and John Prochazka, Kathy Phillips, Colleen Votruba, Dennis Zeller, Mary Schekall, Grant Campbell, Mike Delsing, and Mary Pat Coplen.

Football – Coach Dale Rien and the Bobcats were 2-6-1, with wins over Harrison and Crawford (Parent’s Night) Homecoming had a bittersweet flavor, with the Cats fighting to a 6-6 tie against Minatare. All Conference Honors went to Greg Moeller, Dennis Zeller, Jay Cowan, Steve Morava, Dudley Prochazka, and Dan Lliteras.  Assistant coach was Louis Russ.

Volleyball – The Lady Cats were District Runner-ups, and finished third in two other tourneys for Coach Duane Knaub. Players included Debbie Wood, Robyn Anderson, Sheri Gordon, Joni Roes, Cindy Wilkins, Penny Overshiner,  and Carol Wood. The reserves were 7-4, while the “C” team was undefeated at 4-0.

Cross Country – Even without a specific coach, the Harriers were conference champions by a single point! Members included Philip Schmitt, Casey Brost, Dan Brost, and Ed Wernke

Girls Basketball – Not featured in the yearbook - ???

Boys Basketball – Coach Rien and lettermen Steve Morava, Tom Yellow Hair, Max Gonzales, Ed Wernke, Dan Lliteras, Dennis Zeller, and Alberto Canedo finished with a 12-4 record, the best since 1962. Louis Russ was the assistant. The JV’s were  6-5, with the frosh 5-5. The Junior High Boys were undefeated at 7-0 in 7^th grade, and 7-0 in 8^th grade.

Wrestling – Dudley Prochazka, 126 pounder, qualified for state with a 20-8 record, with 185 pounder Aldon Sample joining him in Lincoln with a 21-7 record for Coach Lawrence Johnson’s grapplers. The Cats were 6-5 in duals. Greg Morava, Dan Brost, Dean Buskirk, Bruce Foley, Howard Elder, Dave Horner, Greg Elliot, Kirt Klester, Casey Brost, and Paul Ray were other team members. Mike O’Malia was the assistant coach, with the reserves earning a 4-3 dual meet record.

Girls Track and Field – The girls set a mile relay record, and an 880 relay record, with Joni Roes the only point scorer at Districts, placing fifth in the Discus. Relay members included Colleen Katen, Nancy Lemke, Rosann Stumf, and Mary Schekall.  Coach Duane Knaub also had Penny Overshiner, Mary Ann Coplen, and Keri Votruba on the team.

Boys Track and Field – Dan Lliteras was the district champ in the Discus, advancing to the state meet. He set the school record at 132’6” while Dennis Zeller set the mile record at 4:51.4. Dave Roes and Tom Zajic also placed at districts. Doug Messersmith, Bob Haas, Dave Mundt, Dan Brost, Doug Duncan, and Bob Philips were also members for coach Dale Rien.

Golf – Don Hanks and the “big five” placed second and third in several meets, led by Chuck Schmitt and Mike Delsing. Others included Dennis Sherlock, Byron Johnson, and Dan Swanson

Clubs and Activities – Science Club purchased back packs and camping equipment from proceeds earned at the Science Club Carnival. Pep Club sponsored a pizza party and hosted the sports banquet at the end of the year. Varsity cheerleaders were: Kim Hansen, Carol Wood, Caren Schekall, Sheri Gordon, and Sue Schekall.

Girls Athletic Association and “H” Club raised funds to buy weight equipment and track uniforms

Homecoming Royalty – Queen was Colleen Votruba and King was John Prochazka. Attendents were Joni Roes, Debbie Wood, Greg Moeller, and Mike Wacker. “Moon Fire” provided the music for the dance, themed, “A Time For Us”.

Prom Royalty –  Queen was Colleen Votruba, King was Dan Brost. Attendants included, Juniors Steve Morava and Sue Schekall; Sophomores, Dan Lliteras and Sonya Heinz; and Frosh, Mike Kresl and Mary Schekall.

Prom Theme –  “Rock Around The Clock”; Music was provided by  The Dynamics; A water fall and fountain were featured decorations.

Senior Class Motto –   “ The Moment May Be Temporary, But the Memory is Forever”,  Class Colors - Light Blue and Dark Blue; Class Flower – the Mum; The senior class donated money to the school to purchase a scorer’s table for the gym.

Senior Class Officers – President – Ed Wernke; VP – Greg Moeller; Secretary -  Greg Morava ; Treasurer -  Caren Schekall

Junior Class Officers – President – Dan Duncan; VP – Doug Armstrong; Secretary – Kenny Darveau; Treasurer – Steve Morava. Sponsors were Mr. Bahn and Mrs. Headden. The class raffled off a turkey, given away at halftime during basketball season. The juniors also sponsored a sock hop after a home football game, and took care of the concession stand throughout the year.

Sophomore Class Officers – President – Keri Votruba; VP – Sonya Heinz; Secretary – Bob Haas; Treasurer – Rosann Stumpf. Sponsor was Mr. Russ. The sophomores raised money with a spring car wash, and two sock hops, one which featured a door prize drawing.

Freshmen Class Officers – President – Grant Campbell; VP – Gailene Horstman; Secretary – Mary Pat Wilkins; Treasurer – Colleen Katen. Mr. O’Malia was the class sponsor. The freshmen spent the first semester taking a grammar workshop, and followed that with a Bobcat Den dance.

State Competitions –  The journalism team, sponsored by Mr. Fodnes, won the Class “C” championship! Dennis Zeller and Mike Wacker placed second and third in Broadcast Journalism, while Alberto Canedo placed third in in editorial cartooning. Kim Hansen placed third in Column Writing. The journalists traveled to Chadron each month to print “The Feline”, Hemingford’s school newspaper.

Awards/Honors – Dennis Zeller was named the all-around student from the class of 1975; Joni Roes was awarded the outstanding student citation by the Hemingford Legion Post; Debbie Wood and Dan Brost were recognized for contributions to the school in good citizenship. Mrs. Volkmer, FHA Sponsor, won the state honorary chapter award, with Joni Roes elected State Parliamentarian, and Carol Wood, District Secretary.

The Hemingford FFA won first place in the District Vocational Agriculture Contest The agronomy team and Dan Ray in Land Judging also took top honors in Districts. Three teams; Livestock Management, Livestock Judging, and Agronomy competed at state contest.

Special or Unique Happenings – Back again, and drawing many throwers was “ The Meanest Teacher Dunking Contest”. Mr. O’Malia was the winner, with Ed Warnke and Colleen Votruba garnering “meanest students” awards.
