Student Council Highlights Members helped to set up Computer Data Match Dates, helped with a community clean up project, helped award the VIP treats, and coordinated the surprise package from the district at Christmas.

National Honor Society Members Corey Winten, Julie Hennings, Kory Haas, Melony Manning, Amanda Glendy, Ceyonne Ullrich, Mick Wright, Kami Wills, Tad Delsing, Kim Ahrens, Holly Zajic, Heidi Zajic, Darcy Kampbell, Heather Bremer, Nick Schledewitz, Laura Gasseling, Sarah Moser, and Becci Schmit.
Music Department Courtney Cullan, Chad Willey, and Kayleen Becker all qualifies for the Columbus Honor Band and Chorus. Ms. Cullan won the John Philip Sousa Band Award on Honors Night.
Speech Two students qualified for State Speech for Sponsor Kathy Bridge. Darcy Kampbell and Megan Wernke earned trips with their performances at districts. Other speech team members included Julie Hennings, Anne Moser, Kami Wills, Sara Clark, Karina Dye, Justin Schumacher, Shantel Early, Mick Wright, Tad delsing, and Brook Raschke.
Football The team, coached by Kurt Finkey, played hard but finished with a 0-8 record. Seniors included Kory Haas, Jesse Mintkin, Corey Winten, Chris McMahon, and Terry Fistler.
Volleyball Coach Kay Horstman, in her fifth year at the Lady Cats helm, started the season 3-1, but faded to a 6-12 overall record. Team captain was Kim Ahrens. Holly Zajic, Sarah Moser, Katie Gettert, and Holly Reed were all class captains.
Cross Country The girls were led by Laura Gasseling, finishing as Western Conference Runnerups. They also finished second at Chadron. Members included Brandi Chytka, Shae Brost, Courtney Cullan, Abbey King, Jamie Buskirk, Becky Hunter, Laura Gasseling, and Heather Bremer.
Girls Basketball Kara Haas won the Miss Hustle award and Kim Ahrens earned the best all around player award for Coach Kurt Finkey, as the Lady Cats were 6-12. Victories came over Rushville, Hay Springs, Crawford, Gordon, Morrill, and Sioux County. The Ladies lost three of their games by one point. Assistant Coaches were Cindy Ahrens and Samantha Swanson. Team members included Sarah Moser, Kim Ahrens, Kara Haas, Heidi Zajic, Kerri Morrison, Holly Zajic, Melissa Kuhn, and Laura Gasseling.
Boys Basketball Tim Lanik and his team won two games in district play, finishing as the runnerup in a 13-8 season. The Cats were Panhandle Conference Champions, beating Rushville and Crawford. Assistant Coach was Ron Schmit. Players included Brandon Vogel, Chris McMahon, Travis Buskirk, Jesse Mintken, Corey Winten, Ben Ahrens, Matt Benda, Nate Lanik, Buck Mintken, Aaron Wade, Scott Morrison, and Bill Olson.
Wrestling Coach Planansky had 24 grapplers out this season, and two qualified for state. Members included Ror Garcia, Mike Coleman, Heath Bremer, Tim Buskirk, Mike Gibson, Nick Schledewitz, and Mick Wright. The team finished 2nd in the Hemingford Invite, and won four duals while losing five.
Girls Track and Field Coach Cindy Ahrens sent three girls to the State Track Meet, along with winning the Panhandle Conference Meet. Kim Ahrens qualified in the 100, Kerri Morrison in the 200, and Abbey King in the 300 Low Hurdles. Tori Sorensen broke the school record in the Discus, throwing 106 ft. 8 inches. The girls also wore new warm ups this year! Other members included Brandi Chytka, Brooke Raschke, Holly Reed, Becky Hunter, Alicia McDonald, Billi Olson, Kristen Kulas, Tobie Baker, Dail Hucke, Kara Haas, Kamie Buskirk, Deanna Counts, Anne Moser, Janel Pederson, and Laura Buskirk. Brandi Chytka was a favorite to return to state, and had won the Vern Phelps 200 Memorial Award at the Bayard Invite, but sat out the last half of the season with an injury.
Boys Track and Field The young boys team finished in second place in the Panhandle Conference Meet, but had only four upper classmen. Members included Robert Custard, Brandon Vogel, Aaron Reyes, Nate Lanik, Matt Benda, Chris McMahon, Adam Davies, Troy Sorensen, Scott Morrison, Colby McCoy, Eric Reed, Aaron Wade, Jesse Mintken, Shaun Kuhn, Scott Wright, Jason Trickler, John Sample, Ben Ahrens, Jeremiah Mundt, Chris Koozer, and Nick Schledewitz.
Golf Winning the Panhandle Conference Meet, and finishing fourth at Districts were highlights. Mike Coleman was the individual Champion at Districts, and finished 8th at the Class C State Meet. For Coach Mike Mooney. Members included Chad Buskirk, Nick Planansky, Mark Swanson, Shad Bryner, Cody Swanson, Corey Winten, Corey Crowder, Ben Rowe, Tim Buskirk, Shelly Buskirk, Karleen Becker, Danea Wright, Julie Hennings, Heidi Zajic, Holly Zajic, Mike Davies, Trent Phillips, B.J. Baer, Eric Schmit, Mike Coleman, and Mick Wright.
Clubs and Activities Cheerleaders were Wendy Davies, Melony Manning, Shelly Buskirk, Misty Cheek, Darcy Kampbell, Ceyonne Ulrich, Shae Brost, Janel Pederson, and Jessica Schledewitz. H- Club members worked concessions and helped with homecoming. FFA President was Kim Ahrens. VP was Kory Haas, Kami Wills was secretary and Clayton Jacobs was treasurer. Robert Canaday was sentinel, and Justin Schumacher was the news reporter for sponsor Ken Brown. FHA officially became FCCLA this year at HHS. FCCLA officers included Darcy Kampbell, President, Becci Schmit, VP, Amanda Glendy, Secretary, Kim Ahrens, treasurer, and Kami Wills, Historian. Mrs. Buskirk took eighteen members to state competition, where all eighteen earned medals. SALSA – Students Against Lack Witted Substance Abuse. Led by Tori Sorensen and Bryan Colson, coordinated Red Ribbon Week, a movie night, and an all school dance.
Homecoming Royalty King Kory Haas, Queen Kim Ahrens, attendants Chris McMahon, Wendy Davies, Mike Gibson, and Kerry Morrison. Theme was Dishing Up a Sweet Victory, with Monday, Elvis Day, Tuesday Cornhusker Day, Wednesday Poodle Skirt or Greaser Day, Thursday Jailhouse Rock Day, and Friday the traditional Show Your Spirit Day.
Prom Royalty King, Jesse Mintken; Queen, Melony Manning; Attendants, Chris Koozer, Heather Bremer, Scott Morrison, Sara Clark, Nate Lanik, and Holly Reed.
Prom Theme A Knight to Remember, with a banquet at the United Methodist Church, and an after prom party. There was a long tunnel for the entrance, as well as a fountain, a flower garden, a gazebo, a large castle, and knights in shining armor! DJ Al played music for the dance.
Senior Class Motto Even though we all may become extinct, we all have a chance to leave our footprints in the sand, by Dr. Seuss; Class Flower was a champagne rose, Class song was Time to Change by Motley Crue, and class colors were navy blue, hunter green, and champagne.
