Student and Faculty Highlights of the Year

Student Council Highlights – The STUCO sponsored a Halloween dance, and worked to have the dress code requiring socks with shoes changed by the school board. National press coverage brought attention to the effort.

National Honor Society Members – Jeff Gaertig, Joe Planansky, Scott Green, Kim Wood, Corey Campbell, Casey Walker, Anthony Wyland, Rhonda Quick, Amy Hall, Sonja Shaver, Chris Engel, Adam Hall, Stephanie, Hughart, Ed Planansky, Angela O’Brien
Music Department – Under the direction of Sue Shaver the band and chorus did well at District Music Contest and their holiday concerts. Jo Craig received honors in voice and Joe Minich received the John Philip Sousa Award.
Drama and One Acts – The one-act “Shantyland Pool” was directed by Lyle Fodnes. Cast members included; Joe Planansky, Corey Campbell, Sonja Shaver, Mandy King, Scott Green, Ed Olson, Jeff Gaertig, Amy Baer, Chris Engel, Tonya Raben, and Kalvin Kresl. Planansky received the 1990 Drama Award.
Football – As the new coach, Ed Planansky and the Bobcats capped their 7th non-losing season in a row with 7 wins and 4 loses. Victories over Kyle, SD; Rushville, Hot Springs, Bridgeport, Morrill, and Bayard, and a one-point loss to North Platte St. Pat’s helped the Cats go two games deep into the Nebraska State Football Play-offs, where they dropped their last game of the year to state power Grant. Kalvin Kresl and Corey Campbell both rushed for over 1,000 yards, and Campbell set a new Class C-2 State record with 388 yards against Homecoming foe Rushville. Two all staters, Corey Campbell and Joe Planansky led the way in post-season honors, with Kalvin Kresl, Anthony Wyland, and Darby Jespersen also gaining all-conference mention. Assistant Coach for the team was Shaun Adams.
Volleyball – Coach John Cundall and his team never gave up even though they ended with a 2-17 record. The girls played hard all season long, however, beating Hay Springs and Harrison, and having post-season honors go to Amy Hall and Tonya Raben. Assistant Coach was Theresa Dillan.
Girls Basketball –Endured a tough season with just 2 wins and 15 loses under Coach Cindy Ahrens. The victories came over Minatare and Harrison. Letter winners included Tonya Raben, Kim Wood, Becci Lehl, Jamie Haymaker, Sammy Horn, Kelli Koozer, Angela O’Brien, Layla Bradis, and Marla Pianalto. Assistant coaches was Johnna Wood.
Boys Basketball – Coach Tim Lanik and his young team completed the year with a 7-13 record, including wins over Hay Springs (2 wins) , Minatare, Harrison, Rushville (2 wins) , and Morrill. The Cats lost five other games by less than five points, including two one-point losses. The Cats lost twice to State Champion Bridgeport, once by only eight points. Post season Honors went to Ed Olson who was on all the area honor teams as well as the two state all star lists; Jeff Gaertig and Dan Davies. Assistant Coach was John Cundall.
Wrestling – The Cats had their first State Champion in Senior Joe Planansky. Freshman Matt Honstein finished third at State, and a total of Nine Cats qualified for Coach Murph Planansky. The team finished with 62.5 points at state, good enough for 9th place in Class C. Individual season honors went to Matt Honstein, Kalvin Kresl, Corey Campbell, J.B. Schwaderer, and Joe Planansky. Planansky and Campbell were also All-State Academic in Nebraska. Shaun Adams was the assistant wrestling coach for the Cats.
Girls Track and Field – Coach Cindy Ahrens and her team achieved many successes. Pam Wood qualified for the State meet in the Long Jump.
Boys Track and Field – A young team of 26 lead by Coach Tim Lanik. Dan Davies and Archie Shipp qualified for state, with Davies throwing the Discus and Shipp running the 3200 meters. The boys won one meet and finished seond in two others.
Golf –Coach Shaun Adams and his team members enjoyed playing just for fun. The team participated in six meets.
Close Up –Ten students raised funds and attended the annual trip to Washington D.C. They included: Kim Wood, Jamie Hamaker, Lori Wilder, Tracy McCart, Becci Lehl, Brian Specht, Corey Campbell, Clint Spath, Pete Sall, and Casey Walker. Steve and Sally Engelhaupt were the trip sponsors. Sires visited included the Air and Space museum, The Vietnam Memorial, The Iwo Jima Memorial, the changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery, and the Washington Monument.
Clubs and Activities – The FFA attended District and State Contests for sponsor Mr. Brown. President Joe Planansky also won honors as, Star Agri-Businessman; Vice President was Kenny Jenkins; Scott Green was Treasurer; Jacci Schwaderer was Secretary; J.B. Schwaderer was Reporter, and Sentinel was Darrel Jenkins. Chris Mundt was selected Star Green Hand. The JETS (Junior Technical Engineering Society also visited the University of Colorado, and watched the Buffalos.
Future Homemakers (FHA), had Lori Wilder as president; Sonja Shaver as Vice President; Becci Lehl as Treasurer; Amy Hall as Secretary, aand Stephanie Hughart as State Representative. Gold Medals were won at Districts by Hughart, Samantha Horn, Marla Pianalto, and Pam Wood for an AIDS presentation.
Homecoming Royalty –Queen – Tonya Raben; King – Joe Planansky; Attendants – Pete Sall, Dan Davies, Nikki Johannes, Amy Pieper. A volleyball game against Gordon and a football game against Rushville were played for Homecoming. The gilrs lost in two sets to state-rated Gordon, while the boys bested the Longhorns 41-26. Corey Campbell set a C-2 State Football record with 386 yards on 41 carries. D.J’s Dan Davies and Jeff Gaertig provided the music for the dance.
Prom Royalty – Queen – Jolie Montague; King – Dan Davies; Attendants – Shon Townsend, Sonja Shaver, Craig Kumpf, Stephanie Hughart, Brian Thramer, and Holly Wade. Crown Bearers were Brooke Vogel and Shawn Hansen. Sophomore Servers were Pam Wood, Stephanie Hughart, Sammy Horn, Kelli Koozer, Craig Kumpf, Troy Turek, Darby Jespersen,, and Ed Planansky.
Prom Theme –“ Paradise City”, with colors of black, silver, and purple.. Music was provided by “The Rock Orphans”. A jail and a drunk tank were features that were enjoyed, as well as many community prozes for students attending.

Sophomore Class Officers –President – Ed Planansky; VP – Darby Jespersen; Secretary – Samantha Horn; Treasurer – Pam Wood. Largest Class to ever attend HHS. Class sponsors were Mr. Cundall and Mrs. Smaha.
Freshmen Class Officers –President – Mark Klemke; VP – Justin Gibson; Secretary – Brian Benda; Treasurer – Shawn Hunter. Mr. Brown and Mrs. Rouse were class sponsors.
State Competitions – Football, Wrestling, Boys & Girls Track
Special or Unique Happenings – Scott Green received the, “Chocolate Cookie Award”, as the outstanding Spanish student. Voters approved a new shop building and additional classrooms. New teachers this year were Mrs. Hucke, Business and typing; Mrs. Giorgi, P.E. and Math; and Mr. Cundall, Math and Computer.
