The STUCO represented the student body at the Bobcat Dens; were in charge of sending well wishes to any students that were in the hospital; and honored NHS seniors.

National Honor Society
The National Honor Society had eleven seniors, seven juniors, and five sophomores. Mr. Chismar served as NHS sponsor first semester, with Mr. Fodnes taking over second semester.
The NHS acted as student guides at Parent-Teacher conferences.
NHS members served as guides to parents on Parent-Teacher Conference night.
Journalism and Yearbook:
Students at HHS took part in many activities in Journalism, including the yearbook itself, being selected to the” Quill and Scroll Society”, and wrote articles and took pictures to be used in Hemingford’s student publication, “The Feline”.
Judy Hennings, Mary Darveau, and Tom Gasseling all served as Feline Editors during the 1967-68 school year for sponsor Lyle Fodnes.

Music Department –
It was a successful year at HHS in music, as the chorus and band performed at spring and Christmas concerts as well as the Class “C” District music Contest. Mr. Arnie Quinonez directed both band and chorus. Band officers included: Nancy White, Band Captain; Lynette Haas, Assistant Band Captain; and Barb Becker, secretary. Linda Golka was the Drum Majorette for the 55 member band.
In chorus, Mr. Quinonez had 68 members, and included a Girl’s Glee group and a Mixed Chorus. The band financed it’s annual trip by selling magazine subscriptions. Parents helped out by selling concessions after each concert at home.

Drama , Three Act Plays, and One Acts –
In speech and drama, there were many opportunities to be involved. The One Act Play, “ Wonder Hat”, competed at Panhandle and won the runner-up title. In District Competition, Hemingford High School was the District Champion! Cast members included Pam Wood, Candis Stumpf, Dick Zeller, Steve Dickhute, and Jerry Kiester.
“Riders to the Sea” was also performed at the One-Act festival and on “Elmer” Award night. Cast members included, Steve Dickhute, Joyce Harden, Kathi Robison, Dorothy Wood, Nancy White, Karen Winten, Bruce Engel, Robert Turek, Wayne Sample, and Jerry Kiester.
Dick Zeller won a superior in Interpretive Public Address; while Jerry Kiester won in TV Commentary.
“My Three Angels” was the last play presented in the 1967-68 school year. Roger Nagelschneider, Bruce Engel, and Jerry Kiester played the parts of convicts that escape in the play. Other cast members included Bob Moravek, Kathi Robison, Tom Gasseling, and Rick Benda.
“Visit to a Small Planet” was the three-act this year at HHS. Characters included: Nancy White, Bruce Engel, Candis Stumpf, Dick Zeller, Tom Gasseling, Steve Dickhute, Jerry Kiester, and Charles Danbom.
Winning awards at Elmer night were, Rick Benda, Linda Becker, Nancy White, Dick Zeller, Doris Wood, Steve Dickhute, Kathi Robison, Bruse Engel, Candis Stumpf, and Jerry Kiester.
Football –
It was a fall of good wins, unfortunate injuries, a scoreless tie at Homecoming, and an upset win over state rated and undefeated Minatare. Coach Phil Snyder and a team of 21 members finished the season with a 3-4-2 record. Wins came over Harrisburg, Minatare, and St. Agnes. The Cats tied Sidney St. Pats and Morrill.
Post season honors went to : Dick Zeller, Larry Zajic, Brad Rosenberger, and John Campbell.
Volleyball – Coach Don Baruth and former Coach Andrew Chismor guided their team to a 6-8 season, including a winning streak in mid-season of six straight.
The Volleyballers lost their coach in mid-season, but rallied for a third-place finish at the Mitchell Invite.
Team members included: Janet Gordon, Martha Dickhute, Lynette Sedlak, Debbie Wyland, Terry Dufek, Barb Becker, Vickie Hansen, Peggy Moeller, Linda Roes, Sylvia Klemke, Linda Herbaugh, Linda Becker, Karen Winten, Candis Stumpf, Margie Wax, Doris Wood, and Gail Hudson.
Boys Basketball –12 players and Coach Phil Snyder worked through a tough season with a 4-16 record. The Cats split the first two games of the season, and then went 3-15 the rest of the way. Ten of their losses were by less than eight points, and the Cats were always in the thick of things.
Down by 22 points late in their District Tourney opening game, the Cats came roaring back, losing only by three to the top seeded tigers.
Brad Rosenberger led the team with free-throw percentage, while the leading scorer was Bruce Engel. Rosenberger and Dick Zeller were the teams’ Co-Captains.

In a game won by the Cats 54-51 over Rushville, Charles Danbom goes up for two points.
Bruce Engel, the Bobcat’s leading scorer in 1967-68, goes in for another two points against St. Pat’s.
Wrestling – The wrestling team of Bill Hebbert, Rick Wacker, Les Walters, Dennis Zajic, and Kent Frost attended four meets as they kicked off the Bobcat Wrestling Program. The boys were coached by Gherald Ford.
The boys gave an exhibition at half-time of the last boy’s basketball game of the season for the home fans.
Girls Track and Field –Coach Phil Snyder and the team competed in six meets and set many records.
Boys Track and Field –Coach Rusty Belina and the tracksters had an outstanding season.
The Cindercats, Champions at Chadron and in the Panhandle Conference.
Bruce Engel and Brad Rosenberger led the way in the hurdles for the Bobcats. Engel set a 15.1 record in the 120 Highs and 20.4 in the 180 Lows. Rosenberger was conference champion in the pole vault at 12’10”, a Class “C” record, and went on finish as State Runner-up in the low hurdles and the vault at State. Engel also qualified for the state meet in the hurdles.
State Class “C” Relay Runner-Up- Gary Zajic, Mike Hudsen, Larry Zajic, and Jerry Kiester ran a new school record 8:20.2 two-mile relay time in winning the conference meet, and placed second at the state meet.
Golf – Coach Don Baruth coached golfers Gordon Glass, Dick Zeller, Darroll Roberts, Dale Speer, and Kerry Wood. The Golfers finished in third place in a triangular with Crawford and Hay Springs, three strokes behind the winner, and justa single stroke out of second place.

Homecoming Royalty – Queen – Doris Wood; King – Gary Zajic; Attendants – John Kampbell, Donna Delsing, Karen Winten, Larry Zajic.
Prom Royalty – Queen – Doris Wood; King – Terry Fickel; Attendants – Mike Brost, Deborah Wyland, Bob Smith, Karen Messersmith, Donna Delsing, Brad Rosenberger, Lynette Haas, Tom Gassling.
Prom Theme – “Underwater Fantasy” The decorations, “transformed the gym into an underwater fantasy”.
