Student and Faculty Highlights of the Year

Student Council –
Student Council Members – Stuco President was Bruce Engel, and was sponsored by Lyle Fodnes.
National Honor Society Members – Karen Messermith and Bruce Coplen were new members.
Music Department – Arnold Quinonez directed 46 members in the band and 64 members in the mixed chorus. Linda Golka was the Drum Major, and led the Band in marching competition in Rapid City. Of all of the Class “C” Bands in Rapid, Hemingford placed second!
Drama and One Acts – The All-School Play was, “Mr. Angel”, sponsored by the Junior Class. Winners of Elmer Night Awards were: Kathi Robison, Best Actress; Jerry Kiester , Best Actor; Linda Golka, Best Supporting Actress; and Tom Gasseling, Best Supporting Actor.
The Dramatics Club presented their contest One Act, “ Dust of the Road”, at the Panhandle”C” and District Contests. Kathi Robison and Jerry Kiester won individual acting award at both contests.
“Here Comes Charlie” was the third Dramatic Offering at HHS during the year, and was sponsored by the Senior Class. Judy Hennings and Jerry Kiester received Best Actress and Best Actor Awards for their efforts, while Sylvia Klemke and Rick Benda won awards for their supporting roles.
Football – Coach Larry Sweet led the team to wins over Harrisburg 31-0; Hay Springs 19-0; and Sidney St. Pat’s 33-6.
The Cats started with two shutout wins and ended with a dedication win over St. Pat’s, but suffered a five-loss streak in between. Homecoming was a tough loss with the Cats losing to St. Agnes 13-6.
Players of mention during the 1968 season were; Bruce Engel, Tom Gasseling, Rick Benda, Dann Reynolds, Ron Meradith, Bob Smith, Jerry Kiester, Bill Hebbert, and Mike Hudson.
Volleyball – Coach Baruth and the volleyball squad won games over Hay Springs, St. Pat’s, and O’Neill. Members included Lynette Sedlak, Janet Gordon, Peggy Moeller, Barb Becker, Linda Roes, Sylvia Klemke, and Janny Moeller.

Girls Basketball –
Boys Basketball –The 1968-69 season was one with some close losses and not many victories, as the Coach Larry Sweet led Bobcats won only two games, against St. Pat’s and Chadron Assumption , also suffering a one point loss to Hay Springs.
There were seven seniors on the team. Members included Jerry Kiester, Mike Hudson, Bruce Engel, and Bob Smith. The JV Cats were Coached by Don Baruth and finished the season with a solid 8-4 record, promising good things in the near future.
Wrestling –
Cheerleading and Pep Club – Varsity members were Lynette Haas, Barbara Becker, Linda Roes, and Janet Gordon. Other members included Mary Ann Wood, Garlea Fisher, Vicki Hansen, Debbi Lucas, and Cheri Hansen.
Officers for the Pep Club were Lynette Sedlak, Sylvia Klemke, Mary Darveau, and Peggy Moeller. The Pep Club sold balloons at Hoemcoming, sponsored a bake sale, and had a cake walk at the Penny Carnival. They also hosted a Pep Club Dance. Mary Darveau and Dennis Honstein were elected HHS Girlfriend and Boyfriend.
Girls Track and Field –The girls team featured record breaker Phyliss Roberts, who ran a 7.8 50 yard hurdle race, along with Sylvia Klemke, Lynette Sedlak, Linda Roes, Karen Danbom, Pat Delsing, Mary Ann Wood, Vicki Hansen, Karen Prochazka, and Jan Schledewitz.
The 440 yard relay also reset the school record, running a 54.1. Klemke, Sedlak, Prochazka, and Schledewitz made up the record breaking team
Boys Track and Field –The 880 relay team, composed of Bob Smith, Mike Hudson, Dann Reynolds, and Senior Jerry Kiester won the Chadron “C” Club meet and scored high points all season long.
There were 16 letterwinners on the team. Mike Hudson broke the school 440 record of Delbert Wyland, set in 1959, running a 51.3. He qualified for the state meet in the 440 and the 880. Mike Brost, who place third in the mile at District was also on the team, as well as Tim Brost, Chuck Messersmith, Robert Milo Yellow Hair, Bob Coplen, Kenny Hucke, and Tom Nelson.
Golf –
Clubs and Activities – H- Club hosted a Pepsi-Pizza supper and dance to finance football films. President was Bruce Engel, VP was Jerry Kiester, Robert Yellow Hair was the Secretary-Treasurer.
FFA – Delegates to State Contest were Kent Frost and Dave Darveau. The “Dusty Rangers”, were led by Ron Salomon, Rick Benda, Tom Gasseling, Rich Kriz, Dana Sorenson, Bob Delsing, Ken Hennings, and Ron Meradith. Mr. Lee Messersmith was the Chapter Sponsor.
FHA – Sylvia Klemke and Denice Pipett received Chapter Degrees. Jan Moeller, Janna Dee, and Sandra Davis received Junior Degrees. Peggy Moeller and Linda Roes were elected to District offices, and Sylvia Klemke placed in the top three at Districts in Creed Speaking.
The FHA helped sponsor the Pheasant Feed with the FFA, and also served the Pine Ridge Teacher’s Dinner. Janny Moeller and Linda Roes attended State Convention for Sponsor Mrs. Robison.
Journalism – Co-Editors for the yearbook were Kathi Robison and Linda Golka. Mary Darveau won third place in the Silver Key Journalism Contest in Lincoln. Bill Hebbert competed in Editorial Consultant, and Karen Messersmith was in Editorial and News Feature at the contest.
Homecoming Royalty – Queen – Lynette Haas; King – Bob ; Attendants – Jeffy Kiester, Cathy Johnson, Bruce Engel, Barb Becker
Prom Royalty – Queen –Lynette Haas; King – Denis Honstein; Attendants – Juniors: Denice Pipitt, and Mike Hudson, Sophomores: Vicki Hansen and Mike Brost, and Frosh: Mary Ann Wood and Mike Coplen; Crown bearers – Pam and Kevin Baruth.
Prom Theme – “Garden of Golden Dreams”, a beautiful lattice fence was decorated with real red roses intertwined in the lattice.
The Prom – The Banquet was held at the Methodist Church, with Ralph Price emceeing. Sophomore servers were: Vicki Hansen, Terry Dufek, Kathy Prochazka, Rodney Planansky, Bill Smith, Charles Messersmith, Dann Reynolds, and Mike Brost. Don Haas was the Head Waiter.

Junior Class Officers – President – Roger Mazanec; VP – Ralph Price; Secretary – Denice Pipitt; Treasurer – Bill Hebbert. The Juniors planned for Prom, raising money from the Penny Carnival and were responsible for the concession stand.
Sophomore Class Officers – President – Chuck Messersmith; VP – Dann Reynolds; Secretary – Kathy Prochazka; Treasurer – Marcia Price.
Sponsor Mrs. Lucero helped the Sophs put on a Sadie Hawkins Dance, as well as two Sloppy Joe feeds. The “Misty Blue Society”, a band from Chadron, performed at the dance.

State Competitions –
Special or Unique Happenings – Speech students, under the tutelage of Sponsor Lyle Fodnes spent the year recording a weekly radio show that was broadcast on KCOW. Jerry Kiester was the main recorder for the show.
Bob Yellow Hair was selected as a Boy’s Stater his Junior Year, had the highest Basketball field goal percentage his senior year, and was the first Native American to graduate from Hemingford High School. He planned to attend the University of Nebraska and Major in Pre-Law.
Yoshiko Tamura, an exchange student from Japan, spent a year in the U.S, much of it in Hemingford.

Yearbook Dedication – Two students at Hemingford High, Abram Garcia, who died following surgery, and Michael Walker, who died after a car-pedestrian accident , will be missed by classmates and friends.

Board Members – Reorganization of seven rural districts along with the city schools was completed this year. Serving their last days as Old District 18 members were: John Wiltsey, secretary, and elected members, Dale Wood, Marie Roes, and Charles Anderson. The new District will be known as District 10.
