Student and Faculty Highlights of the Year

Student Council Highlights – The STUCO was led by Co-Chairs Kayla Kulas and Kyle Wade. They coordinated Homecoming activities with the cheerleaders and sought to come up with new ideas and additions to the school.

National Honor Society Members – Adam Wacker, (President) Roy Hucke, (Vice-President) Aric Klemke, (Secretary) Trista Dye, (Treasurer) Shaina Giorgi, Chelsie Jensen, Amy Hashman, Joelle Schumacher, Melinda Wernke, Kristi Gettert, Amber Fastmacht, Chad Armstrong, John Haas, and Keal Messersmith. The NHS took a trip to Denver to see, “Phantom of the Opera”, after sponsoring, “Rock, Roll, and Risk” night to earn money . Ten new members were inducted in May. The NHS members carried on a tradition of tutoring elementary students.
Music Department – Swing Choir performed many times, notably at the Christmas and Spring concerts, as well as the Music Parents Dinner Theatre. The talented group, directed by Kim Wiedeman, received a silver rating at Old West Weekend, a Superior Rating at Districts, and were Champions of the 2000 Jazz Festival at Chadron. In Band, HHS took first place in the Sidney Oktoberfest parade and in the field show; First place at CSC Band Day; and earned Superior Ratings at District Music Contest. The band and flag team also performed in and around Denver on a trip they took.
Drama and One Acts – The cast members for the one act, “The Lottery”, placed second at Rushville (PAC); fourth at Mitchell (WTC), and fifth at Districts. Roy Hucke, Scott Shaver, Terra Smith, Reidi Smith, April Bare, and Amber Fastnacht all received acting awards for their performances.
Speech Team – Finished as conference runner-up in the PAC, with every team member taking home a medal. At Chadron, the team also placed second. Sponsor for the team was Kathy Bridge. Members included Amber Stahl, Jenny Morava, Joelle Schumacher, Walker Dobry, Cortney White, Justin Spickelmier, Amber Fastnacht, Jeri Henderson, Alaina McDonald, Brad Scott, and Jessica Lopez.
Hillbilly Weddin’ was the Spring play that had audience members rolling in the aisles. Karen Fastnacht directed, and was assisted by Cathy Fingar.
Football – Coach Tim Newman and his WTC Champs ended the season with an 8-1 record. The team started the year as the number 9th ranked team in the state and finished number 4 in Class C-2.. Captains included Matt Gasseling, J.J. Gonzales,Roy Hucke, Travis Buskirk, Adam Wacker, and Austin Engel. The Cats dropped a heartbreaker to Bertrand, 7-6, to end a great season.Adam Wacker was First Team All-State on Defense, with many WTC First team selections, including Travis Buskirk, Brett Sorensen, J.J. Gonzales, and John Haas. Honorable Mention went to Roy Hucke, Paul Ray, and Scott Shaver. Assistant Coaches were Todd Ziettlow and Chris Watt. The team finished rated the top defense in the state.
Volleyball – Coach Ramona Hucke with the team of 12 ended the season 12-16. Letterwinners included Jaci Manning, Amber Yardley, Lindsey Lanik, and Andrea Engelhaupt. Amber Yardley made all conference in the PAC and the WTC; Jaci Manning also received honors from both conferences. Andrea Engelhaupt and Linsey Lanik were Honorable Mention winners. Assistants included Lisa Haas and Wanda Morrison.
Cross Country – Newcomer Coach Cindy Lanik led her team to a great season.
Girls Basketball – The Ladycats had a good season with an overall record of 13-8 coached by Tim Newman.
Boys Basketball – This year’s dynamic bunch coached by Tim Lanik ended with a team record of 19-4. Senior team members included Aric Klemke, Paul Ray, Dusty Cheek, Matt Gasseling, J.J. Gonzales, Roy Hucke, and Scott Shaver.
Wrestling –Adam Wacker was the 215lb Class “C” State Champion to lead the HHS Grapplers. Four other wrestlers also qualified for state. The team ended the season as one of the top teams in the district.
Girls Track and Field – The team of fourteen girls ended the season by sending three state qualifiers to Omaha, Melissa Wright, Randi Furman, Andrea Engelhaupt, aided by Coaches Cindy Ahrens, Kay Horstman, Kim Wiedeman, Caryn Ziettlow.
Boys Track and Field – Coach Tim Lanik and his team of 19 placed in the following: 2nd – Gordon invitational, 6th – Western Trail meet, 1st – Panhandle Conference meet, 6th – District meet, two qualified for the State Track Meet.
Golf –Coach Ziettlow led a young golf team. Freshman John Coleman and sophomore Nick Stockton qualified for the Best in the West.
Clubs and Activities –
FFA – Sponsor Jim Milne had nineteen State Contest qualifiers, and six of the seven local officers attended National Convention, held in Louisville, Kentucky. Planting trees, selling fruit, and hosting their annual work auction all helped to promote FFA. Officers included Alaina McDonald, Becky Towne,Amy Hashman, Adam Wacker, Amber Fastnacht, Trista Dye, and Chelsie Jensen.
FCCLA –Mrs. Sarah Fedderson, FCCLA sponsor, helped lead the members in Little Brother and Little Sister activities, meeting once each month for games and educational activities. The Parlimentary Procedure Team qualified for state, with members Amber Fastnacht, Keal Messersmith, Kristi Gettert, Trista Dye, Melinda Wernke, and Misty Prochazka competing there. Officers included Chelsie Jensen - Secretary; Trista Dye-Vivce President; Amber Fastnacht-Historian; Sara Hoover-Treasurer; and Misty Prochazka-President.
Close Up – Mr. and Mrs. Newman sponsored the annual trip to Washington, D.C. for the twenty-one HHS students. Work at the Wheat Shack, the Diorama, and serving lots of dinners helped to raise the needed funds. The hotel and the food in the nation’s capital were not highlights, but the students were still able to bring back lots of experiences. The Air and Space Museum, the Jefferson Memorial, and the dance were all enjoyed.
Quiz Bowl – Scott Shaver was all conference in the PAC; Jerry Henderson was Honorable Mention. Other team members included Roy Hucke, Jessica Heitz, Starr Giorgi, J.J. Gonzales, Aric Klemke, Marcos Cervantes, Scott Delsing, and Brennan Vogel.
Cheerleading and Flags – Members of the Cheer squad included Amber Yardley, Stacey Brost, Suny Brown, jenny Morava, Cortney White, Jessica Lopez, Ashley Prelle, and Terra Quick. The Cheerleaders received all superiors at a camp in Bridgeport they attended. The girls sponsored a Pee-Wee Cheerleading camp, and performed in the annual County Fair parade. Sponsors were Sonya Buskirk and Peggy Mintken. Flag Team members were Annie Kulas, Amy Hashman, Terra Smith, Amber Yardley, Reidi Smith, April Baer, Jaci Manning, Lindsey Lanik, and Annie Kulas. Kim Weideman, who also directed the marching band, was the Flag Sponsor. The team marched in the same parades the band did, showing off the grueling hours of summer and early morning practice.
Don’t Do Drugs – 3D Club Sponsor Mandy Plog had members raise money for a trip to Evan’s Plunge, and had plans to attend a summer retreat with other schools. They also sponsored a visit from the “Grim Reaper”, a presentation about the dangers of drinking and driving. Members included Nathan Craig, Matt Prochazka, Charlie Peters, Andrea Colson, Jody Colson, Jeremy Schmaltz, Catherine Hoffman, Jessica Lopez, Shawnna Prelle, Jackie Davies, Ashley Prelle, Bethany Jerke, and Brandi Walker.

Homecoming Activities – The theme was, “Days Gone By”, and the classes decorated the halls with gusto. The juniors had graffiti and strobe lights, but the Sophomores were the winners. The Sophs had a fashion show, 8-Track tapes, and cassettes featuring the music of the past three decades. The Volleyball team dropped a tough match to Bayard, winning one set. The boys trampled rival Garden County by a 47-0 count.

Prom Theme – “A Night on the Nile”. Sponsors Tim Lanik and Dennis Zajic watched over the Junior as they decorated, building a giant King Tut and other exotic displays.
Senior Class Motto - “The ultimate measure of a person is not where that person stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where that person stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
